CIRCOM Regional wins the XX International Prize Grupo Compostela - Xunta de Galicia

• The President of CIRCOM Regional announced that the 6.000€ of the prize will be given to the European Youth Centre, to support A Peace Summer Camp for youth from Europe and countries in conflict
• The Jury highlighted CIRCOM’s work on promoting European identities and cultures through the promotion of diversity and tolerance

compostela prizeSantiago de Compostela, Spain, May 3rd 2016 - The Compostela Group of Universities (CGU) and the Xunta de Galicia announced today the decision of awarding the XX International Prize Grupo Compostela-Xunta de Galicia to CIRCOM Regional, the European Association of Regional Television, as an acknowledgment for its support to diversity and regional development in Europe.

The announcement was made today through a press conference, with the participation of the President of the Compostela Group, Marek Kreglewski, the Regional Minister for Culture, Education and Universities, Román Rodríguez, the Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Juan Viaño Rey, the President of CIRCOM Regional, Jean-Marc Dubois and the Secretary General of CIRCOM Regional, Fernando Ojea.

cgulogo330The Jury of the Prize, composed of three representatives of the Xunta de Galicia and three representatives of CGU member universities, appraised CIRCOM Regional’s support to European cultural diversity, likewise “the promotion of tolerance and integration values in the construction of Europe”, as said by the Secretary General of the Xunta de Galicia for Culture, Anxo Lorenzo.

Jean-Marc Dubois, President of CIRCOM Regional, showed gratitude for the award, and highlighted that CIRCOM brings together broadcasters from 33 states, more than 250 public channels and more than 10.000 professional working at them”, and “the aim of the International Prize Grupo Compostela-Xunta de Gaicia of promoting the share ideal of Europe is exactly the purpose of CIRCOM”.
Dubois announced that the economical contribution of the Prize, 6.000€, will be allocated to the European Youth Centre of the Council of Europe, which will organize in July a Peace Summer Camp that will bring together youth from Europe and countries in conflict. This economic support will contribute to the participation of young Syrian refugees.

compostela prize2Before the announcement of the Prize, the President and the Secretary General of CIRCOM Regional held a question&answer session with Communications Students from the USC, under the title ‘Regional Public Service Broadcasters: A Tool for Democracy in Europe’.

The International Prize Grupo Compostela–Xunta de Galicia, since its creation in 1997, has awarded leading figures and institutions from several fields. As the CGU’s President highlighted, “the Jury had to award one institution among 20 candidacies”. In the latest four editions, the Prize went to the Erasmus Programme (2015), the Swedish Scientist Lennart Levi (2014), the European news channel Euronews (2013), and to the College of Europe (2012).

The award ceremony will take place on the 20th of September 20156, during the XXII General Assembly of the Group at the Universitat Jaume I (Castellón, Spain).
