Minority Broadcasting in Public Service Media in Europe workshop

On November 24th 2015 MTVA hosted European colleagues, editors of minority programs and representatives of minority communities to discuss the role of television and radio in the life of minorities.
This meeting gave a chance to learn best practices of successful minority broadcasting, to expand network and to provide proposals for international cooperation.
Participants shared experiences on professional TV reports about the small and big minorities and discussed the role of minority broadcasting in intercultural dialogue.
Unfortunately, the assimilation, i.e. becoming assimilated to the majority, as well as losing of the mother tongue of the domestic nationalities is an almost natural process. Fortunately, it is a slow process. Moreover, it can also be reversed, the mother tongue and identity of a nationality can be even regained if we act reasonably.
One of the most effective tools in above process is television broadcasting.
The Hungarian Television, in a unique way in the region, started its minority broadcasting at the end of the seventies in Pécs and Szeged. The first German and Serbo-Croatian language nationality programs were aired on 16 August, 1978. These programs have been extended to 13 nationalities, contributing to the preservation of their national identities and cultural values.
