Matej Praprotnik is the Assistant Director for Radio Strategies at RTV Slovenija. He was a delegate at CIRCOM Regional's Social Media Workshop at ROOS Dagen 2014 where he delivered a presentation on this topic.

RTV Slovenija’s online offering is centralized at rtvslo.si under the MMC RTVSLO brand. While it does offer a very useful starting point to explore news and multimedia throughout RTVSLO’s online, radio and television products, it cannot not fully support the online needs of regional broadcasters and radio stations. Radio Slovenia’s most popular radio channel, Val 202 , therefore, started investing in digital and social media strategies.

Since it is a work in progress, Wordpress was chosen as the development platform. In three years it has quickly become a playground where many online scenarios and user cases are being tested. The goal of radio developers remains one final, yet dynamic online design, applicable to all radio and regional broadcasters within RTV Slovenija. Once it is developed, it will be built in the same content management system as MMC, thus achieving an important step toward an integrated newsroom.

One such example is a translation experiment for a weekly science show, where listeners are invited to ask questions, write transcripts and translate interviews with foreign scientists and authors such as Dr Ben Goldacre . All of these interviews are then available online under creative commons licensing. The same goes for most of the photo material produced by Val 202. Photos of the recent Sochi Olympics were all published on Flickr under a Creative Commons licence. Raw material (audio, photo or video) might motivate listeners to become better content producers and co-producers. We believe copyrighted material can no longer be the only material a public broadcaster has to offer in order to justify its fees. Photos from Sochi were indeed used in more than 30 newsblogs around the world, all giving credits to Radio Slovenija and Val 202.

To achieve a greater response and engagement, a lot of time has been invested in building audiences on social media. Since Val 202 is by far the most successful radio station on Twitter - in Slovenia - some of Twitter’s rules have been applied to Facebook too. Followers on Twitter are still most willing to engage in production of both news and radio. In a series of experiments, Twitmix, a short radio show with a selection of the best (most humorous) weekly tweets was established, creating a very accurate archive of important/trending events in Slovenia.
