General facts about RTVS - Radio and Television Slovakia



Slovak Television (STV) is a state-owned public television network and the oldest TV channel in Slovakia. Its first program aired on November 3, 1956 from the television studio in Bratislava. Contemporary STV came into existence with the separation of Czechoslovakia on July 1, 1991 and was the first public- television service in the transforming countries of Central and Eastern Europe.        

Currently it runs 3 channels. For decades it has played a key role not only on the television market but also in the creation of public opinion. Every day it covers news and current affairs, documentaries, entertainment and many other programs.

Jednotka (Channel One) is profiled as a universal family channel. Its programming enables it to compete with the commercial television networks. The most successful program is Mail for You (Pošta pre teba) and for the latest programme season also Eurovision Song Contest 2009, where Slovak Television took part after 10 years (the average market share was 26,85 %).             

Television broadcasting on Dvojka (Channel Two) is focused on more sophisticated viewers and minority genres. The key genres of this channel are documentaries, factual programmes, European films and regional news programs.

Trojka (Channel Three) broadcasts sporting events. The satellite airing started the era of receiving the television signal in the high definition (HDTV) and at the same time it became the next step in the phase of terrestrial digital broadcasting.

Broadcasting of Slovak Television is reachable by abroad audience via satellite and internet, too.

Financing and Audience Figures
Slovak Television is funded from a combination of television licence fees, advertising, and government funding.

Slovak television is controlled by Television Board and Controlling Commission.

In general there are 4 commercial televisions and one public television (Slovak Television) in Slovakia. According to the audience figures, its whole-day market share is 20,6 % and 22,4 for the prime time (all three channels), with the daily market share of 15,2  % for the Channel One.

The future
Slovak Television is currently preparing for switching from analogue to terrestrial digital broadcasting. This process should be completed by 2012. In order to fulfil these goals, Slovak Television must undergo a number of structural changes in programming, equipment, technology as well as financing.

STV has two studios – Kosice and Banska Bystrica. The headquarters of the STV are in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
