Structure

A dual system of broadcasting,  nationwide channels: 4 channels at the public service Ceska televize (CT - Czech TV) commercial TV  Nova (since 1994),  Prima TV, TV Barrandov, Z1 – news TV, cable network with limited own programming, mostly from abroad.

Czech Television

Public, 4 channels. ( first and second channel, all kinds of programming, ČT 24 – news channel, ČT 4 Sport) Started on 1st January 1992 after the splitting of Czechoslovakia and Czechoslovak Television (1953 - 1992).  The Broadcasting Act of 1991 regulates radio and TV transmission. The executive is headed by General Director – Jiří Janeček. The control body of public television is the Rada Ceske Televize - Council of Czech TV, elected by Parliament

Organizational Units – CT in Prague, Television studio Brno, Television studio Ostrava.
Czech TV has nationwide broadcasting, with regional daily news and some other programmes (Praha, Brno, Ostrava)

Czech Republic - Approx 10,3 million inhabitants, about 3.9 million households. Czech TV transmitted  35,883  hours in 2009.

 

Programming – full spectrum of programs,  CT is also an important producer and co-producer of movies

CT provides analog terrestrial broadcasting, digital terrestrial broadcasting, satellite digital broadcasting by the satellite Astra 3A, on-line broadcasting and an on-line archive (selected programs of own production).

Channel CT1 - all types of programmes (family viewing)

Channel CT2 - mainly culture, art, music, documentaries and programmes for special audiences.
Major sport events.
Teletext of CT is also available free of charge.
The TV licence fee is 135 Czech crowns /app. 5,5 EUR/  monthly, it is an important part of financial sources, with commercial operations. Czech TV is financial independent from the state budget.

Technical Facilities
Complete - 2 studios; Betacam SP, /2 film, 2+5 camera car, MVTR, OB-vans. Sound and dubbing studios. Graphic animation.

Ostrava - an industrial city with 330,000 inhabitants/ with a larger area of 700,000/third biggest city of Czech Republic, industrial, 2 universities, theatres/4/, Janáèek Philharmony Orchestra, museums...Centre of Northern Moravia and Silesia, 1/8 of CR area, 2 million inhabitants. Except for regional daily news it is a national broadcaster, it contributes about 5% of broadcasting to Channel 1 and 2 of Czech TV. All types of programming are being produced, drama and films- about 5 a year, documentaries, magazines - children, youth, health, environment, religion, culture, news, entertainment, music, programmes being financed through various sources. The station has 270 people on staff.

Complete - similar to Ostrava

Brno is the second biggest town (400,000 inh.) of the Czech Rep., situated in Southern Moravia (1/5 of Czech Rep.). Seat of the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, (5) Universities, International Trade Fair, numerous theatres (10).

It produces all types of programming - drama and TV films, documentaries, magazines - children, youth, culture, religious. Contests, entertainment, music, news. The station was founded in 1961.
