The Austrian broadcasting company Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) is organised as an independent public corporation. ORF's main broadcasting activities take place at Funkhaus and ORF-Zentrum in Vienna. In addition, ORF runs one local station in each of the nine regions where radio and TV material of more local interest is provided. Every day, ORF airs about 170 hours of radio and some 48 hours of TV programmes.
ORF provides a public service on the basis of the Constitutional Act of 10 July 1974. By the same Act, the company's independence was secured.
The broadcaster televises two separate 24-hours full-selection programmes, which cover with great topical plurality the fields of news, arts and education, science, economy, sports, and practical help, and include feature films and entertainments. Whether purely academic or funny, whether simply providing information or making viewers feel at ease - the ORF programmes will always be clearly distinct from those of more commercial or special-offer networks.
The nine local stations of ORF have independently operated production facilities, through which they produce their own radio and TV broadcasts. The studios and offices are linked with the central ORF facilities via direct audio/video and data systems and connected to ORF's nationwide computer network. Not only sources of information but also institutions of specific cultural relevance, the local stations produce essential and manifold stimuli for the benefit of their audiences.
In about 97 % of Austria's 3 million households there is at least one TV-set available for you. 74 % of the households are linked to a cable network or receive satellite programmes. The two TV programmes broadcast by the ORF (ORF 1 and ORF 2) cover 48 % of the cable/satellite market in Austria.
The Republic of Austria consists of nine Federal States, each housing a Regional Studio of the ORF. So the ORF's network is backed by nine Regional Studios, each fully equipped for the production of both radio and TV programmes. The Regional Studios are:
- Burgenland Regional Studios
- Carinthian Regional Studios
- Lower Austrian Regional Studios
- Salzburg Regional Studios
- Styrian Regional Studio
- Tsyrolean Regional Studios
- Upper Austrian Regional Studios
- Viennese Regional Studios
- Vorarlberg Regional Studios
As an average, each of the Regional Studios produces a daily radio programme reaching an audience of some 40 %. Beginning with April 1, 1998, in Austria 54 private radio stations will go on air.
In the TV-sector the Regional Studios produce nine independent regional programmes of 25 minutes regional news per day, a one hour regional Talkshow five times a week, the daily regional News-show "Region Today" (7.00 p.m.) reach a market share of 70 until 80 %.
Furthermore the Regional Studios contribute to the nation-wide programmes, producing some 10 to 15 % of the total broadcasting material mostly in the news, sports, culture, economy and similiar sectors.
Another production focus of the Regional Studios are independent programmes, especially in information, culture and ethnic culture.
