This story took a lot of preparation. Before I began, I met a lot of people who work daily with people with disabilities and who are aware of the problem of sexuality; people who work in family planning associations and are also interested in the sexuality of people with disabilities. I had contacts with foreign countries; I wanted to know the best practices to meet the emotional and sexual needs of disabled people.

Finally, I realized that in Belgium there were some institutions that were very open minded but they did not want to speak publicly. The reason is simple: families of people with disabilities are not always aware of the answers institutions provide to their children’s needs about sexuality; for example relationship with prostitutes, correctly position couples so that they feel comfortable in bed...

And then I found the “Arthur Régniers Centre”. Since a long time, they arrange rooms for couples with disabilities. They are particularly comfortable in their approach. Psychologist Pascal Coquiart did a lot of work with the residents. Finally, during the shooting, many wanted to testify. I had to make choices.

In the story, I limited my approach to persons with physical disabilities as Vincent Fries; he helped me a lot because, for him, sexuality is not a taboo subject. I also chose people with mild mental disabilities who could explain what they felt. The mentally disabled persons with a very heavy handicap have, of course, also sexual needs that must be taken into account. But this will be for a future story.

The report also approaches the loneliness and the desire to go to a prostitute. In the institution, those who wish to are supported in this process and everything goes well.
But sometimes the person with a disability can be exploited or the prostitute may also feel powerless in front of the disability. That’s the reason why I also wanted to talk about sexual assistance; these are people who have received a specific training to meet the sexual needs of these people. In Belgium, this paid and framed service exists in the North of the country.
The sexual assistants usually work in the psycho-social sector.

By making this story, I also learned that the way to live its sexuality is not different in the world of disabled: everyone has its own way of living its sexuality; couples of disabled persons also tear themselves and this reality must also be managed in the institution.
