2026 generative ai and journalism

Tuesday 29 September 2026
10:00am to 11:00am CEST (Paris)
09:00am to 10:00am BST (London)

This webinar is designed for all media professionals: journalists, editors, producers, and other newsroom staff.

Goals

The aim is to equip participants to use AI in their day-to-day work by explaining which AI tools are currently available and useful, how to use them responsibly, and how to address the ethical issues their use raises in an editorial environment.

The focus will be on:

  • Ethics: reflects the emergence of official AI charters across the sector so that participants can engage directly with the strategic choices being made within organisations similar to their own.
  • The landscape of tools.
  • Q&A and practical advice applicable to different editorial environments.

Host

Nelly PailleuxNelly Pailleux is COO and co-founder of CheckFirst and a former journalist. She experienced the adoption of AI in a newsroom during her year and a half spent at Les Surligneurs, the French fact-checking outlet. It was during her time at Les Surligneurs that the organisation developed and adopted its own editorial charter on AI use, and Nelly was directly involved in those internal debates, giving her first-hand experience of what it means for a newsroom to formalise its approach to AI at a moment when the stakes were just becoming clear. She has also served on the board of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), a coalition of more than 60 fact-checking organisations across Europe committed to the standards of methodology, ethics, and transparency, where AI is discussed weekly among organisations.
Today, as COO and co-founder of CheckFirst, she brings this experience to bear on how AI is reshaping both the tools used to detect information manipulation and the newsroom practices built to counter it.

Speaker

Linda Hermansson150Jyri Kivimäki is a media professional with over 25 years of experience at Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company, working across editorial and development roles. For the past years, he has focused on AI implementation in journalism, building AI tools for newsrooms and guiding journalists and producers through the practical realities of integrating AI into daily editorial work. He leads AI development and transformation at Yle. His work includes building Yle GPT, Yle's internal AI environment, and driving the responsible adoption of AI across content production and digital services. He regularly trains media professionals across Europe, including for the EBU Academy and the European Parliament, and firmly believes that AI should support editorial judgment – not replace it.
