This was the third time a workshop hosted by CIRCOM member from the Netherlands ROOS Dagen was held as a part of ROOS Dagen annual conference for Dutch regional broadcasters. The topic was how Social Media and Data Journalism can be used to generate content and find amazing stories.
The workshop took place on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th March and was very hands on. Matt Cooke (Head of Google News Lab) demonstrated how Google can help journalists at their work, how can Google Maps, My Maps, StreetView, Fusion Tables and for instance Google Earth be useful for journalists.
Annewil Neervens (Head Social Media at RTL) told about the new development on social media and how to use them. Henk van Ess (Guest Lecturer Universities) focused on data journalism as part of journalist's normal workflow., showing the skills you need for finding and processing data ‘on the spur of the moment’. Henk van Ess also presented strategies to find news in data, to avoid common pitfalls and to use Excel to interview your data.
