Followed by two days attendance at the 42nd CIRCOM Regional Annual Conference organised by Yle on the 21 and 22 May.

 

What can participants expect? Workshop Objectives

  • To make storytelling and strategies for creativity the main focus in the journalistic field.
  • To give participants training to a level where they are competent in the use of smart phones for filming, recording audio, editing and using multiple apps to achieve the desired effects.
  • To introduce delegates to Artificial Intelligences impact on journalism and learning how to work with the technology instead of against it.
  • To learn how to develop story ideas suitable for an shooting with a smartphone.
  • To get to know the hardware, software and apps that are available to them.
  • To understand the workflow in order to avoid mistakes.
  • To give participant’s the necessary skills and confidence to work with a smart phone when appropriate.

Topics: storytelling, the rules – and how to break them, sequences, interviews, sound, stills, shooting, editing, new formats: explanatory videos, oneshots with creativity, using graphics (to obey company policies and save space for that in your shot), What impact will AI have for journalism and creative work,

By the end of the workshop, it is expected that delegates will have produced a story, based in Tampere. These stories will be showcased in at the CIRCOM conference in Tampere and published on CIRCOM website. Delegates are welcome to keep and share their stories.

The training will be conducted in English, and it is important that applicants have a good working knowledge of the language.

Because the workshop is of an intense nature and requires a great deal of commitment from trainers and participants alike, priority will be given to those people, who already have some field practice but want to raise the bar. If you have not made any visual stories on your own, but still are hungry enough – convince us in a two-paragraph text.

Who will lead the workshop?

Darko Flajpan: Videojournalist who works as a full time television skills trainer at HRT in Zagreb, Croatia. Darko has provided his services for CIRCOM training since 2003. He is a regular trainer on the CIRCOM’s MoJo and Video Journalism workshops. Darko established the training centre for HRT and is a senior member of the CIRCOM training team.

Jarno Tahvanainen: Jarno "Jama" Tahvanainen: Renewal Architect at Yle, Finland, responsible for AI and digital transformation capabilities, including the mobile journalism training framework. Former MoJo Producer & Trainer, TV-news director and Feature-length documentary Filmmaker. His "Yle mojo concept" won the EBU Technology Award Silver in 2021.

Inside the Tampere-talo.
From Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 May 2026 with a welcome dinner on arrival on the evening of Sunday 17th May (more information will be send).
Followed by two days (21 and 21 May) attendance at the CIRCOM Regional Annual Conference organised by Yle. The conference will offer a unique opportunity to learn from top industry experts and connect with peers from across Europe.

 

Accommodation

From Sunday 17th May (arrival) to Saturday 23rd May (departure). Delegates will stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Tampere City Yliopistonkatu 57, 33100 Tampere, Finland.
The hotel is next to the Conference venue.

 

Who pays what?

The training is free of charge for CIRCOM Regional Members
Accommodation (6 nights) with breakfast included is offered by CIRCOM Regional.
Travel expenses, meals (apart from those offered*) are the responsibility of the participants and NOT paid by the regional CIRCOM.
Transfers - at the expense of each participant.
All applicants must have personal insurance coverage for accident, illness and loss of property.
(*Offered by CIRCOM: The welcome dinner, lunches during the three days of training and by Yle: Thursday and Friday lunches, food for the reception on Wednesday evening, and the gala dinner.)
