Application process is now open for a new workshop “Fact-checking & verification” hosted by Yle in Helsinki, Finland. The workshop will be led by Johanna Vehkoo and will run for two days from Thursday 11th April at 10am to Friday, 12th April 2024 at 4pm.

What can participants expect?

European elections themed workshop focused on:
– what is political fact-checking & how it's done
– monitoring election-related content online
– identifying and tracking election interference and disinformation campaigns
– computational propaganda & elections
– verification of visual media online: photos, videos, synthetic media
– tracking political ads
– investigating websites
– how to become the search expert in your newsroom
– lots of hands-on exercises connected to each theme (+handouts)

Who will lead the workshop?

The workshop is led by Johanna Vehkoo is a journalist and non-fiction author who specialises in all kinds of misinformation and fakery on the Internet. She has written five non-fiction books, including works about abandoned places & post-industrial ruins, online misogyny, misinformation, and tolling. She is a founder of the online investigative journalism magazine Long Play. She has completed fellowships at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University, and at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.

When and where will the workshop be held?

10 April: Arrival – Welcome dinner at 7pm (Restaurant: Penelope - Mikonkatu 9, 00100 Helsinki).
11 April: Training from 10am to 4pm.
12 April: Training from 10am to 4pm.
The workshop will be held at the Yle Headquarters, Uutiskatu 5, 00240 Helsinki, Finland from Thursday 11th to Friday 12th April 2024.
Lunches are provided by Yle.

Scandic Hotel Pasila, Maistraatinportti 3, Pasila, 00240 Helsinki, Finland.
Yle has negotiated a special rate: 112 euros per night for 1 person and 123 euros per night for 2 persons (breakfast included).

Deadline for registration is February 29th.
The training is free of charge for CIRCOM Regional Members (as well as the welcome dinner) but delegates must pay for their own travel, dinners and accommodation.
All applicants must have personal insurance cover for accident, sickness and loss of property.
