The 46 million Spaniards have a wide choice of TV stations, both national and regional systems. The national network Television Espanola (TVE) started back in 1957. Spanish regional television first started in San Sebastián, when the Basque Government decided to broadcast to their people in their own language in 1982. A second Basque channel, broadcasting in Spanish, opened in 1986. In 1985 Televisión de Galicia (TVG) set up its own full service transmission in Galician from their station in Santiago de Compostela covering the Galician region.

Similar systems have been implanted in Catalonia (1983), Valencian Community (1989, shut down in 2013 and reopened in 2017), Andalusia (1989), Madrid Community (1989), Canary Islands (1999), Castilla-La Mancha (2000), Asturias (2005), Murcia (2005), Balearic Islands (2005), Aragon (2005), Extremadura (2006) and Castilla y León (2009).

In Spain these broadcasters are usually called autonomous TVs, since they are owned by their corresponding Autonomous Communities, whose governments provide them with subsidies though extra finance is raised through commercials. These stations aim to spread and promote the culture, the traditions, the language and the social and institutional reality of each Community, offering a public service of close contents. They also undertake a crucial role like engines of the local audiovisual industry and innovation.

In 1988 they founded the Federation of Autonomous Broadcasting Companies (FORTA) in Spain. This network of 12 stations and based in Madrid has proved particularly important in securing agreements with major film companies, news services, advertising groups, sports rights owners, other TV companies as well as organising exchanges with other public or private Spanish stations and co-ordinating productions projects with all or part of the members. Besides FORTA stations, TVE also run several smaller regional services, mainly news and sports. Spanish public media are facing up to the current digital environment with new contents and platforms.

TVG was set up in 1985 as the main branch of Corporación de Radio e Televisión de Galicia (CRTVG). This full-service station broadcasts 24 hours per day in the own and official language, Galician, on two digital terrestrial channels reaching around 3 million people in Northwest Spain, and two satellite channels for America and Europe, where there are large Galician communities.
Starting July 3rd 2025,  Corporación de Radio e Televisión de Galicia (CRTVG) changed it's name to Corporación de Servizos Audiovisuais de Galicia, S.A. (CSAG)

The budget of this public service broadcaster is supported mainly by the autonomous Government as well as advertising. The staff accounts near 900 employees in its production centre and four bureaus in the main cities of Galicia plus one more in Madrid.

TVG is leader in news programmes, usually reaching audience shares of 30%. The programming includes news, culture, animation, contests, drama series, featured length films, talk shows and sports. 60% of the production is done with in-house resources.

The public service radio and television company is firmly established in the Galicia and means an engine for the independent audiovisual industry in the region. Shows like “Luar”, with over 20 years on air, or successful series like “Matalobos”, 2012 Prix CIRCOM’s winner for drama category, ratify its consistent success among the audience.

CSAG is working to adapt its contents to the new market demands and developing a strategy focused on mobile and social media. CSAG also counts with specific features allowing to monitor live broadcasts of TVG an Radio Galega, as well as the video on demand.

À Punt is the name of the public broadcasting service of Valencia. It employs 500 professionals distributed across its headquarters, located in Burjassot (Valencia), with delegations in Alicante, Castellón and Madrid. The regional channel has become a reality again after a four-year hiatus following the closure of Canal 9, the previous public Valencian public broadcaster, which operated from 1989—the same year CIRCOM was founded—until November 2013. The channel was already a founding member of FORTA in its first stage and continues to be part of the Federation of Autonomous Radio and Television Organizations.

Proximity is its main value to ensure that residents in this geographical area have immediate access to current events, as well as the quality of the programs it broadcasts, which promote the Valencian audiovisual sector. À Punt aims to be a close, diverse, plural, participatory, independent, and professional medium. The main objective of À Punt is to inform, entertain, and educate the public, as well as to reflect the diversity and cultural richness of the Valencian Community. To achieve this, and thanks to technological advancements, this media includes a television channel, a radio station, and a digital platform (www.apuntmedia.es).

Additionally, À Punt offers the Valencian audience a new service for on-screen and streaming content, as well as a wide catalog of radio programs available as podcasts to choose from on demand. Furthermore, À Punt houses in its Documentation department the most important audiovisual archive of historical images from the Valencian Community over the last 40 years, which belongs to Canal 9. Valencian Radio and Television is now À Punt.

The programming of À Punt offers a wide variety of content, such as news, original series (some co-produced with other national autonomous television stations that are members of FORTA), documentaries, entertainment programs, and spaces dedicated to music and culture. Its festive broadcasts stand out in a calendar that extends throughout the twelve months of the year, bringing traditions closer to all citizens. In short, À Punt is a reference space for public communication in the Valencian Community, with a strong commitment to its identity and society.

ORF – The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation
website: der.orf.at

General information
The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) is Austria’s largest media provider, operating four national television and nine regional radio channels, as well as a comprehensive range of websites.
ORF is formally a foundation under public law and as such must fulfil a number of duties and mandates laid down in the ORF Act.
Being a public service radio and television company, ORF is not profit-oriented, and invests all revenue – half of which comes from radio and TV licence fees, the rest from advertising and other income – directly into the programmes and services it provides to its ORF audiences.
The ORF’s main headquarters and studios are located in Vienna, and the company also operates regional studios in all nine Federal Provinces and maintains a worldwide network of correspondents who contribute to its varied range of programmes in all three media.

TV channels
ORF and ORF 2 broadcast a rich variety of programmes consisting of current news, in-depth information, documentaries, TV-magazines, reports, talk-shows and other shows, movies, and TV-series.
The main target group of ORF and ORF 2 are rather young, cosmopolitan, and urban audiences. Its repertoire includes children's programmes - free of advertisement and violence - and major sports events, as well as contemporary films and series from Austria and the rest of the world, shows and comedies.
ORF 2, on the other hand, addresses a more mature and traditional audience, broadcasting in-depth information, documentaries, and debates. High culture, religion, and science also feature prominently in ORF 2 programmes.
ORF III is a special-interest channel for information and culture.
ORF Sport Plus is a special-interest channel for sports.

Radio channels
Ö1 is a special-interest channel specialising in culture and information, placing an equally strong focus on science, religion, and debates on socio-political issues. It is free of advertisement and counts amongst Europe’s most successful public-service radio channels.
Ö3 is the mainstream radio channel of ORF, accompanying Austrian radio audiences throughout the day with a rich mixture of music, information, comedy, and services. The channel has a loyal family of listeners who regularly join in its active participation campaigns for humanitarian and social projects.
FM4 focuses on contemporary youth and popular culture outside the mainstream, and broadcasts in both German and English, also featuring news in French.

http://orf.at
The ORF’s websites post the country's most coveted online news, also providing in-depth background information and a comprehensive set of services. Moreover, the „ORF-TVthek“ features a 7-day catchup of most television formats, allowing viewers to watch the programmes they missed online.

ORF International
Most of the television programmes of ORF 2 are also available throughout the continent via the Astra digital satellite at ORF 2 EUROPE, conceived as a service for Austrians abroad and for all viewers in Europe interested in Austria and its culture.
In cooperation with the public service broadcasters of Germany and Switzerland (ARD, ZDF, SRG SSR idée suisse), ORF also operates the special-interest channel 3Sat, which specialises in culture and science.
Moreover, ORF is an active partner of the German-French ARTE culture channel and contributes Austrian programmes to the Bavarian education channel Bayern Alpha (Germany).

The roots of ORF can be traced back to 1924; after World War II, the company began broadcasting television, and was re-established in 1958. In 1964, a group of newspaper editors and journalists launched the first Austrian referendum aiming to free ORF from political influence and to put an end to the proportional representation of political parties in the company's management. The referendum was a huge success (832,353 signatures, 17.27% of eligible voters), eventually leading to the ORF Act that entered into force in 1967 and was amended several times ever since.

The regional studios

The ORF’s regional studios in the nine Austrian Federal Provinces produce their own radio programmes around the clock, as well as half an hour of regional TV news every day, which are broadcast in the local windows of ORF 2. Off the air, the regional studios have established themselves as an important vehicle for local culture in their respective Federal Province.
